DOLSIE is loosely inspired by the stories I’ve heard growing up about my late Jamaican grandmother, Dolsie Aletheia McDonald. I was amazed to hear that a woman in my family ran an electric company in Jamaica during the mid 1900s and wasn’t afraid to defend, protect, and support her community, verbally or physically.
She is a character that is in the cross section of mysterious and beloved. Although she passed away when I was only a toddler, she made a larger impact on her local community through her generosity, wit, and fierceness.
